Owen is a drummer, percussionist, vocalist, bass player, composer/arranger, historian, author and radio announcer. He graduated from McGill University in 1971 and from Moorhead State University in 1974.
Currently he performs with the Owen Clark Band, the Owen Clark Big Band, the Ragtime Strutter's Dixieland Band and the Owen Clark Jass (sic) Band. He is the drummer for Jazz singer Rosemary Todaschuk, for the Merv Mauthe Quintet and percussionist with the Rupertsland Brass Band.
As a freelance drummer and percussionist Owen performs with the Winnipeg Singers, The Mennonite Chamber Orchestra, the Gilbert & Sullivan Society, the Lutheran Church Of The Cross Worship Band and with many other bands, singers and performing groups in the Winnipeg area. Owen was the 2009 Manitoba Jazz Musician of the Year and a CD, "The Owen Clark Jass Band," was released in April. 2009.
Owen's compositions for percussion ensemble are performed worldwide. His book "Musical Ghosts, Manitoba's Jazz and Dance Bands, 1914-1966," was released in March 2008. A video documentary based on Musical Ghosts was produced and released by MTS TV "Winnipeg On Demand" and Far Point Films in October 2010. His latest composition "The First Winnipeg Suite for Concert Band," a five movement work based on entertainment venues from Musical Ghosts, was premiered on Dec. 8, 2009 by the River East Collegiate Wind Ensemble directed by Jeff Kula.
