I found this movie in You Tube in a mute version and this is my proposition to make it speak. The performing orchestra is John Sylvester Orchestra using also the name "Original Indiana Five" - two names for the same NYC band led between 1922 until 1929 by a trumpet player Johnny Sylvester from Indiana.
This side, with the world famous charleston composed by Fred Fisher, was recorded for Pathe Actuelle in 1925.

  • Josephine was truly an amazing performer. I had to research her for a drama biography, and her life was truly amazing! She makes all the entertainers today look like copycats! She will always be the best!

  • Somedays I wish I grew up in the 1920's.

  • luv the vid and josephene but hate the fact that its called hottentot though:(

  • They loved her for more than that...why would they continue to go see her long after she had passed the topless, bannana skirt age? Black Americans love her and regard her highly my friend ;-)

  • No. I'm not kidding. The French loved the novelty of a negro dancing around topless while wearing a skirt of bannanas. To the Americans, Baker was just another Black woman.

  • Are you kidding? The French loved her (Americans too). I tried to find information to support your claim about them calling her phony, but could not. Anyway, the dances they did back then were different, so if your basing your opinion of her dancing skills based on what we have today that wouldn't be wise. As far as her singing goes...there are plenty of vids on here that show her talent.

  • 1:51 is totally where beyonce must have gotten the single ladies thing from
