http://www.InmateLifeskills.com | When one takes the road toward "the dark side", it can sometimes be difficult to get yourself out of the deep hole you've dug yourself into. Such is the case of people who are incarcerated. Sometimes it seems that life is pretty much over once you are behind bars and sentenced to years in prison. However, there are opportunities to better yourself even while incarcerated. Correspondence courses exist to help inmates improve their situation. Life doesn't stop once you are imprisoned and correspondence courses give you the opportunity to look deeply into your soul and find clarity in your life.
There are many different correspondence courses for inmates that are being offered. Some deal with anger management, substance abuse, difficult relationships, while others cover ways to promote self-awareness as they teach you to overcome self-defeating attitudes and behaviors. Each correspondence course helps inmates make better choices to reduce repetition of criminal behavior and therefore improves their chances of keeping out of the criminal justice system.
Some prison systems even have tie ups with certain universities and colleges to offer college correspondence courses for inmates. Here, prisoners have the chance to get higher education with some even earning a college degree while incarcerated. Studies have shown that those who took college courses for inmates greatly reduced their recidivism rates making them more prepared and adjusted to reenter the community.
However, government is not giving much support to these inmate correspondence courses. Most of these prison education programs are being funded by private organizations. This is such a shame considering research has shown correspondence courses to be effective in bringing down recidivism rates significantly. We should be able to offer inmates opportunities to learn important life skills that will help them reintegrate themselves to society. Inmates are at a point in their lives where there is not much left to do but reevaluate their circumstances and look into the true meaning of life. They may have done unlawful things but that doesn't mean that they don't deserve a second chance. Everybody deserves another chance at life and one way that prisoners are able to do this is with correspondence courses for inmates.
