Program notes for the big percussion concert WILDFIRE which was held at the Malmö Opera House, March 16th 2010.

A SPARKLING PERCUSSION CONCERT
It all started with a sparkle in the Music Library at the Malmö Opera. Magnus Johansson and Benjamin Staern work here daily who also happens to be composers. They contacted the Percussion Ensemble from the Malmö Opera, and planted the idea of making a slightly chamber concert. Enthusiasm from the involved now made the fire to spread and the flames got stronger and stronger. More composers got attached to the project, which gave the fire more fuel. It is now all realized into a sparkling and euphoric percussion concert held at the Malmö Opera House big stage with 5 works of which three of them are world-premiered.

OMBRA
In Ombra Tobias Broström has cared out his music in a similar way to his orchestral pieces from recent years. This entails creating a living and progressive musical form with variations in timbre and color, and also harnessing the tension of harmony and modality. Ombra means shadow in Italian and most of the piece was written in Italy in December 2009.

For me, the music consists not only of the dark quality of the conception of the word shadow, but also its volatile nature. Music never offers the same story to every listener, but I particularly like the concept of narrative in music. You could see Ombra, or rather listen to it, as though it were a Chinese shadow play, says Tobias about his work.
