Today's kids have a greater affinity and aptitude for high-tech gadgets than ever before. But it's a long way from playing with a parent's handheld to creating an electronic play experience that's age and developmentally appropriate. Fisher-Price's iXL is a high-tech gadget that is just for kids. The iXL opens a world of learning and entertainment with six applications. http://www.timetoplaymag.com/toys/2015/fisher-price/ixl/
Ther are too many toys like this, kids don't need this kind of toy. I never had anything like this and I have the IQ of a college student. Parents and teachers can teach kids a lot more than this thing.

If you purchase this product it is highly recommended that you also purchase rechargeable batteries because normal AA batteries will not last very long the ixl pretty much drains normal AA batteries in a few hours of play. Having said that my niece deeply loves this learning system she has the Princess, Toy Story, Ni-Hao Kailan, and Scooby games. She wants a Tinker belle game but they don't make it unfortunately.

Would this work for a mostly blind 89 year old for talking books?

@Flankercom I have never used an Explorer, but I can can tell you how it does up against the Leapster 2 from personal experience. I think the iXL has more to offer in the variety, sound quality, and picture drawing quality versus the Leapster 2. The actual games department for iXL learning games doesn't seem to be as in-depth as a Leapster game, although it does have learning outside of the games, such as the notepad letter and number writing feature.
