Methane is apparently the most stabile and plentiful of all hydrocarbon molecues. The bad news is that it is a gas at most working temperatures, but the good news is that it is transportable by pipeline and is compressible and useful as an internal combustion engine fuel. Other good news is that it is the most likely waste gas in anerobic metabolism. Methane may well be the most common Carbon based gas in the entire universe, since it is so simple as to have thermodynamic properties that allow it to exist on other planets without biological organizms that use it and expel it while living. Most green plants take in CO2 and emit methane (natural gas), CH4, also emitting O2, had H2O as byproducts of their life process
