His grand-father converted to christianity, his mother was catholic and he was quite the praying-all-the-time christian.

@JerryKitich I don't think he did, he had a tendency to get very upset (often violent) with his students when they didn't understand what he was trying to teach. Eventually it got so bad, that he had to resign or be thrown in jail for physically abusing his students. He was also known to surprise his students with pop-quizzes if he ran into them outside school. He wasn't very well liked, by anyone.
