I didn't play them in the Nes. So, thanks to the remakes of Game Boy Color and now DS,... I'm a new Dragon Quest fan.

Okay, if I remember correctly you could select a female heroine in 4. So what happens at the end and the chick that saved you from the monsters revives? I mean they're both girls, so are we talk a dyke out here?

Late reply, but if I may be frank, maybe it's because the ending itself features the woman who loved the Hero (and literally sacrificed herself for him. I guess the same in the Heroine case too) was revived (obviously as a "thanks" from the Zenith/ian / God dragon. It made it hit your heart square in the center with silent joy.
