Bring Me Home for Christmas {2}

We walked into his apartment and suddenly, the joy that was in me was washed away. His apartment was almost empty-- just a small kitchen, a couch with a small old-fashioned TV, and one room and one bathroom. There was a picture up on the wall of him and the baby. It felt cozy but it also felt incomplete. Where were the Christmas lights? The tree? The presents?
The boy put his bags down on the floor and then put the baby down on the small couch.
"Um, I didn't get your name," he says over his shoulder as he helps Hailey take off her coat and draping it on the couch.
"Its Demi," I say, shoving my hands into the pockets of my jacket. He stands back up and shrugs off his jacket, throwing it on the couch.
"I'm Joe," he tells me. He sticks his hand out and I shake it. His hand felt warm. He looks at the baby, who was sucking on her thumb, watching us as she sat upright on the couch. "And thats Hailey, if you havent figured it out yet."
I laugh a bit as Hailey smiles when hearing her name. "How old is she?" I ask.
"9 months in 2 more weeks," he says, then sighs. "She grows up so fast." He looks at Hailey and I could see the love in his eyes. "Oh, where are my manners? Take a seat."
I happily seat myself next to Hailey and she looks up at me, her eyes wide but friendly. Joe goes into the kitchen for a while and then comes back out with two mugs. He gives one to me and I take it.
"Thank you," I say. He takes a seat on a chair. "So its just you and Hailey here?"
"Um.. yeah," he tells me. He scratches the back of his head, putting his mug down. "Its obviously not much but we both call it home."
I wanted to ask him so many questions. How old was he? Why didnt he live with his family? He looked so young. And the question that was bugging me the most: Where was Hailey's mother?
"This is nice though," I say, gesturing around the room. "Its warm.. and cozy."
He looks down at his hands. "I wish I could get a bigger place and give Hailey what she wants, but I just can't afford much," he tells me. "Its.. complicated."
"Oh.." He looked so uncomfortable, I decided to change the subject. "So what were you and Hailey doing out tonight? Shopping?"
He looks up and smiles as Hailey starts to reach for him. He gets up to pick her up. "Yeah, something like that. I like to take her out some nights to just roam the streets. It can be difficult but I know that she likes it a lot. Right, Hails?" The baby looks at Joe and Joe leans in to kiss her forehead. I smile. "What were you doing?" he asks me.
"Oh just shopping for some gifts.."
"That sounds like fun," Joe tells me. "I remember shopping for gifts.. now I can't do it."
"W-why not?" I was curious. He made me curious.
"I-- I'd rather not talk about it." He looks at the clock.
"Hey, Joe?" I ask. He looks at me. "How old are you?.. if you don't mind me asking."
"I don't mind. I'm 18. You?" He says this so quickly.
"17.. what school do you go to?" Maybe he and I went to the same school and I just havent seen him around or--
"I don't. I mean, I don't go to school.. Its a long story. Anyway, its getting late, you should get home or your parents will be worried about you." Again, I felt like he was trying to get rid of me. But I was so curious to know his story. I nod and get up, grabbing my shopping bags.
"Thanks for the coffee," I tell him.
"No prob. Thanks for the help tonight," he says as he leads me towards the door. "I would offer to give you a ride home but i don't have a car."
"Thats fine. I understand." I turn back to look at Hailey and give her a smile. She smiles back at me, wrapping her arms around Joe's neck. I sigh and am about to walk out when Joe calls for me. I turn back around to come face to face with him. "Yes?"
"Um.. Sorry about being kinda pushy tonight.. just been really stressed," he says. "I'm not normally like this."
"Again, its fine," I say. Then, he says something I wasnt expecting.
"When can I see you again?" he asks.
A smile spreads across my face and I let out a breath I didnt know I was holding. "You want to see me again?" I ask.
He nods, blushing a bit. "You seem like a nice girl and I'd like to get to know you better.. plus, you're so good with Hailey. I think she likes you."
My heart starts to race and I find myself nodding. "Sure, of course."
"Are you doing anything tomorrow night?" he says. I shake my head. "Come back here at 8 and maybe we can go roam the streets together."
"Thats sounds good," I say, smiling wide.
"Alright. I'll see you then. Thanks again, Demi." I nod once and turn to leave. The way he said my name just made my heart do cartwheels and stomach fill with butterflies.
