how do i make the handle not have a gap between them when i close?

Add another pice to widen the handle length

Are they ways to reinforce it without metal?

Well, you don't need it, but it's alot stronger like this. If you want, just use card stock or hardened paper (but doing my process makes it last even a couple years longer)
