I'm working on a UAV for a university project, from the research I've done (which while it isn't comprehensive as obviously the military ones are difficult to pull much info from) I would say that the vast majority of the time UAVs are under manual control in much the same where big jets are, a pilot sits there monitoring the aircraft and punching numbers into the autopilot
@SgtSki1436 I know it can fly autonomously, but in general (over 90% of the time) someone is in direct control of the plane. All I am trying to say is that there is a huge misconception out there that all the UAV's fly all by themselves, like the HK in the terminator flicks. That just isn't how they work in general. We both know that. It can't pre-flight it's self.
@garvensman I flew Hunter and also instructed Hunter (and Pioneer) operators for just over 3 years at FT Huachuca, AZ from '93 to '96. Unless something was changed after I left there, Hunter IS capable of autonomous flight. You could set up a program right on the AVLD send it to the DCPA on the bird, to include both flight and payload paramters. And don't forget about Return Home
It's not autonomous. That would mean that it flies with a pre-set program. There is a person in full control of the plane at all times. Unmanned does not = drone/autonomous.. just friendly wisdom from a guy who flies this plane. :D
The Apollo 11 presidential phone call doesn't make any sense for this.
