Scenes of narrow gauge diesel loco DH31 shunting passenger carriages at the Puffing Billy Railway.

Puffing Billy is a genuine relic of our more leisurely days. An historic steam train still running regularly in the mountain district it was built to serve at the turn of the century.

The Railway is the sole survivor of four experimental lines used to develop rural areas in the early 1900's. Puffing Billy is now a major tourist attraction, its operation depending on hundreds of dedicated volunteers.

  • Note the deisel loco in this view, DH 31, was built as a shunting engine for Queensland Railways, which in those days was all 3' 6". It does seem odd to see it in Victoria on 2' 6", but these engines have been conveted to run on 2' on some Queensland cane lines.

Interesting to see a diesel in use for the shunting instead of an NA. :-/
