very hard to believe that even back in the 60s the population was around 2 MILLION, and no skyscrapers!!...now i know why los angeles is so spread out and why it has a small skyline, cause of course no one's gonna spend extra money to make tall buildings they don't need

@LukaszLKW your comment reminds me of at the beginning of westside story, in the playground they're at, on the wall behind the leader of the jets or one of them jet guys, has graffiti that says "lakers" i just noticed it this last time i saw it at regal theatre near staples center on the 50th anniversary of westside story

The tallest building with the cylinder is next by where my cousin lives. In N. Tolucca. =D :)

I love LA<3
The new Wilshire Grand Tower they are building in the near future is going to tie the Empire State Building in NY. So yes the US Bank Tower will be the second tallest after that project is done. Then we will wait to see what beats the WGT in the future other than that new tower going up in San Francisco.

@DarthWray1138 but is the wilshire grand hotel still there? did they tear down?? In my opinion it is a pity that the wilshire grand hotel is going to part of the past... Also I think downtown LA doesnt need more skyscrappers...

The "market" voted with it's feet and abandoned Downtown for Mid-Wilshire starting around the late 40s. The Redevelopment agency then stepped in and tried to create a "New Downtown" by razing Bunker Hill and leaving "Old Downtown" abandoned. All it did was create a soulless place of skyscrapers with no pedestrian street shopping like you have in Midtown Manhattan, Chicago's Loop, and Downtown San Francisco so the "New Downtown" remains TO THIS DAY a place persons don't hang around.

@lukebccb correct: many think it was a mistake and they still regret it: look have many beautiful art-decó buildings they torn down just to get a place to set their skyscrapers. In my opinion it's a pity, old downtown has vanished, it has gone away for nothing.
