However this game captures more of the top-down shooter feel, while the game you mentioned is more like a battle arena.

Check Senko no Ronde and Senko no Ronde duo, its the closest to a modern age shmup Vs problem is that its neither a full shmup or a full VS game so its not very loved by either crowd.
