This video features a Lionel MPC Southern Pacific Daylight Gs4 steam locomotive and matching passenger cars.

This locomotive was made by Lionel in 1983. It's basically the same tooling Lionel used on the Norfolk and Western Class J with a different boiler front and number boards on top of the boiler. It features magnatraction, a smoke unit that also emits smoke from the cylinders, sound of steam, and an electronic whistle.

The passenger cars were available separately. 5 cars, a baggage, combination, two Pullmans, and an observation, were released in 1982. A diner was released in the 1982 Fall Collector Center catalog, a vista dome in the 1983 Fall Collector Center catalog, and a full vista dome, which I don't have, in 1990. Both the diner and vista dome were made in limited quantities and are harder to find then the other cars.

Thanks AO. It really is a nice set. One of the nicest Lionel has made. I can still remember the frenzy and excitement this caused when it came out.

  • That's a really nice set!

Thanks for the comment. Yes, this is the 8307 from 1983. I don't plan on selling it, it's been in our family since it was new. But one never knows what the future holds and I'll keep your offer in mind. And yes, I am very thankful to have this as well as all the trains I have.

4 full vista domes??? Now that's cool. Growing up in the 70's and 80's, the MPC era to me is what the postwar era is to people that grew up in the 50's and 60's. I couldn't wait, and still can't, for the next catalog to come out.

  • is that the #8307 gs-4 s.p from 1983? if it is that is the one that i want that is a wounderful set your lucky to have it there was also a set like that but with the gs-2 4-8-4 lionel made in the late 70s that one seems to be alot harder to find but if i had to pick one i would want the set you have if you ever go to sell and you have all the boxes with the set give me a heads up i know you most likly wont be selling it bull if you did it would be very well taken care of here

  • I always liked how the MPC steamers had steam coming put of their steam chests! Great looking set! And I've actually got 4 of those full vista dome cars!
