How many videos of ballistic testing with a form of ballistic gel do you see on YouTube? There aren't many, in comparison to all the ammo testing videos that have been posted in all formats. I am willing to make an effort to change that scenario. Introduction, overview, and ammo test of SIM-TEST Ballistic Test Media, a format very similar to ballistic gel. After posting over three dozen ammo tests videos using wetpack (May 2009 - December 2010), I felt the need to make a change.

More info on this product manufactured and distributed by Corbin, located in Oregon, USA. If interested, you must order direct.

Wetpack is a very inexpensive media for ammo testing, but it was time-consuming using my format. In the past, I would stuff one gallon jugs with wet newspaper, then cover the first jug with four layers of denim. The process of making five jugs for each test required 2 1/2 hours of spare time. It was not possible to view an accurate "wound channel" with this format, and wetpack is not generally viewed as a reliable testing medium by some people....even though folks have been using it for decades.

This format requires more of a financial investment, but the process is more scientific and should yield good representative results. Compared to calibrated ballistic gel, SIM-TEST:

- Does not require refrigeration. Stable for storage at room temperature, although a cooler environment is preferred.

- Can be used without mixing; maintains consistency.

- Is reusuable. Ballistic gel is one and done. Average lifespan of SIM-TEST is one year, with five years documented in some instances.

- Can be diluted, as it dissolves to a liquid around 160 degrees. Can be re-cast in various mold sizes to meet specific testing needs.

- Is cost-efficient. Multiple uses for a single block.

As I note on all my ammo testing videos, these tests are only a single representation under controlled circumstances. How your ammo performs in your handgun during a lawful self-defense situation is another matter....there are too many uncontrollable and unpredictable variables. There could be some valid data points in my videos, however, please do not make your ammo selection based solely on this video, seek out all resources. There is a wealth of information online; gun forums, ammo company websites, LEO ammo test reports, other YouTube videos, etc.. Dr. Google is your friend.

Beginning February 2011, I will be testing .22 LR, .38 Special, .380 ACP, 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP. In the future, I might add blocks for .223/.5.56 and 12 gauge testing.

  • You do realize that even with all this new stuff, there are still going to be the usual YouTube "experts" that want to chime in and say crap like "these tests don't have any real-world value at all". There's just no satisfying some people ... especially the know-it-alls of the Internet. Definitely looking forward to seeing your future test results!

  • @darkwriter77

You are absolutely correct. I have reached a so-called calbration point with this media, 3.5" using the BB, however, it's overdiluted and much too soft compared to calibrated gel. If I don't use "calibrated" media, I can expect to hear alot of complaining. Whatever. I can pretty much confirm what most people should realize based on this initial video. SIM-TEST and calibrated gel don't appear to have the same base composition. I'll get close and live with it.

  • @Tnoutdoors9 , I'm not sure if you've already answered this but when do you think your next upload with (somewhat calibrated) Sim-test will be? Thank you for all the time, effort and resources you put into these tests. I really appreciate them.

  • @Fisherdave10

By Feb. 19th. I have to decide which diluted factor I'm going to use moving forward. I had to dilute ALOT....you might be surprised, then again, maybe not based on the penetration in the first video. The process would have been completed sooner but I've been on a business trip.

  • Wow that appears to be quite time consuming. And even a little work. I appreciate all of the effort u put into these tests. Your videos are always insightful. I look forward to this year's videos with the new toys.

Do you anticipate re-testing ammo from previous videos?

  • @mobowhuntr

Yes, I will be re-testing a majority of those loads. Between those, what I'm buying, and some new calibers, I have enough tests lined up through 2012.

  • Glad you're doing this. I'll be sending you some .45-70 rounds and slugs to test; better stock up on large quantities of that stuff! Also, it looks pretty tasty to me as I watch you slicing and handling it. How about saving me a few slices for a sandwich the next time I'm over. Maybe fried with some cheese on it. :-)

  • @MrHurrikanable

I'm flattered, but those guys are way beyond my abilities. Even if I had the talent, I'm not up for the drama and BS. I much prefer the YouTube format and the measure of control it offers a channel, not to mention the high level of interaction with viewers. YouTube is the future of TV, IMO.

  • TN at 4:00 how many blocks of sim test was that? or should i say cartons?

  • What grip plug do you have in this glock 19? This is the one I loke the most of the ones you have

  • Having found your uploads and watched virtually all the SIM-TEST videos, I have become motivated to produce my own videos to upload . . . have you been satisfied with the SIM-TEST gel? By letting us viewers it exists will save anyone who is thinking about making ballistic gelatin a BOATLOAD of money - thank you very much!

  • F**k the FBI they are stuck in the 90's. Nobody wears denim Jackets anymore.

  • i like the gel but i have a problem with calbration i cant have a bb gun over 500fps

so as close as i can get is 495fps with a pellet gun(rifled barrel) so lead pellet only how much penetration should i use to calbrate it

  • Now youy have done your homework. SUGGESTION: Go to the Super market and buy you the CHEAPEST rack of PORK RIBS you can find,

Now place a layer of your test media in front of the ribs and SHOOT IT!

Media + Ribs(Meat & Bones) = Realistic test subject. I guess you could even put some Blue Jeans on old Porky too:) Stay Safe and I'll be WAITING!

(I am interested in 45ACP and 9MM findings) Thanks

  • i would love to see a 10mm through this... just saying. it looks alot more realistic than ballistic gel.

  • I'd like to see you use about (4) layers of denium. That would make the test a little more realistic.Hope you would test some Hornady Critical Defense 380 FTX ammo.

  • that is a bad ass knife
