Wow, this Samurai flick looks really dark. I believe it's free to watch somewhere here on the internet, outside of netflix.

Some movies you fall in love with from the very first frame, and then they just get better. This is one such film for me.
Tatsuya Nakadai's voice has never been so compelling as it is here. I wish I had a voice like his.

One of my fav movies EVER. I'd never expected so much from this film. Before I started watching it I thought it was a "normal" samurai/jidaigeki movie but... I was so damn wrong. What about the finale? For sure one of the best I've ever seen. Really my heart is still beating as if I was in the movie myself. This is real immersion not some shitty 3D without plot and with poor characters.

Truly one of my favorites of all time. I don't think I've ever had my heart torn out watching a film as I did in this one, and the way the revenge unfolds is just so sweet. The previous posters who mention Nakadai's chameleon like appearance in different films are spot on. The Tsugumo Hanshiro character he plays in this movie is completely opposite to Ryunosuke he played in Sword of Doom. Just an amazing performance and superb filmmaking by Kobayashi. And yes, Twilight Samurai is awesome too!

That's funny. For awhile I had no idea Nakadai was even in Sanjuro - he looked completely different from being in Yojimbo.
He also has a very snippet of a part in Seven Samurai where he's a passerby samurai - he still looks different.

This is one of the best genre films I've ever seen.
Kobayashi is a brilliant director and Nakadai is as superb as unrecognizable in this film.
In fact, for years I thought that this was a different Nakadai from the actor who played the gun-toting thug in Jojimbo or the scheming samurai in Sanjuro! What an actor!
Criterion is to be commended for its wise decision to acquire distribution rights to Harakiri!
