Hmmm... that's a Korean Ssangsoodo, not a Nodachi (although I guess functionally they're about identical anyway). In terms of how they're holding it, the technique is called "half-handing" and is common to European greatsword styles too. Usually, the blade is not sharpened toward the hilt.

These blades are used to snap bone, pin spears and put shock through heavy armour, sometimes they have no edge at all.
