@papawx3 thanks for the information i was also thinking it was a song about someone in the country music world i got porters cds loaded in my player in my garage and they get turned on almost everyday and i have severel of his albums i play on my old stereo so glad theres others out there who appricate true country music

@1971ed1 I had always heard the song was loosely written around the rise and fall of Lefty Frizzel. He died in his forties from an alcohol related stroke, flat broke and living with relatives.
