Naomi Klein: Wall St. Crisis Should Be for Neoliberalism What Fall of Berlin Wall Was for Communism

As the world reels from the financial crisis on Wall Street and the taxpayer-funded $700 billion bailout, we spend the hour with Naomi Klein on the economy, politics and disaster capitalism. The Shock Doctrine author recently spoke at the University of Chicago to oppose the creation of an economic research center named after the Universitys most famous economist, Milton Friedman. Klein says Friedmans economic philosophy championed the kind of deregulation that led to the current crisis. [includes rush transcript]

  • @sweetpotos Many of us feel and have felt that way. I do too, sometimes. The problem is, markets exist. They are a reality in material circumstances where there is scarcity and scarcity is part of the human condition. We, like any other species on earth, grow until there's no more room and as many die as are born. Only then do we stop. As soon as more room is made, we'll fill that up too. The only way around markets (or to truly free markets), is if we learn not to grow. It's sad.

  • Very true that the left has had it's intellectual feet to the fire of reality, but the conservative right has been given a free pass. With the Great Recession, it's time to burn some neoclassical feet. Those feet have been stinky for long enough. Naomi Klein hits the economic nail squarely on the head with regard to neoclassical disaster in Chile.
