This eastern painted turtle prepares her nest by hollowing out a small patch of dirt. She then lays her eggs deeply inside and gently tamps the dirt over the top in hopes of protecting the eggs until they hatch. Most often, skunks or other foragers sniff out, dig up and eat the eggs before they stand a chance.
