My 2007 Nissan Versa's 6 disc changer's mechanism locked up, causing a "mechanism error" message to display on-screen. After dis-assembly, I determined the cause to be lack of lubrication in the transport mechanism. Here is a video showing exactly how this style of CD changer works. The concept is simple; split the stack to allow the spindle motor and laser to play a disc within the stack. Each disc is locked onto a thin steel vertical-rail mounted platform. When a disc is injected or ejected, the entire stack is collapsed (spindle arm retracted) and repositioned to allow the selected platform (1-6) to line up with the load slot. If this doesn't make sense, watch my video!

After I made this video, I re-lubricated the entire transport mechanism with white lithium grease, and it works better than new! Good thing, too... these units sell new for over $500, and used prices are still too much!

  • Can anyone help me. I have a 2004 Nissan Titan and. I took out my radio and unplugged it. When I plugged it back I heard a noise like the CD's setting in the unit. When I went to power it on nothing works it lights up and shows the clock but doesn't play music. I checked the wires for power and it seems to have it. But wont come on. Can anyone please help out with this?

  • @cityslic It has probably dropped in between the holders and is sitting at the bottom of the deck. You'll have to take it apart and retrieve it but I doubt you'll have to actually disassemble the MECHANISM to reach it.

  • What was the song at 2:42?

  • this is actually pretty interisting i have a 6 disc indash in my subaru and i was wondering how it did all the disc things in such a small space its pretty cool ^-^

  • Everything was like highschool educational video grade until he said "you stupid fuck" lmfao great vid man not boring at all. I respect guys that aint scared to fix theyr own shit like me

  • Interesting... but my problem is I put a mini-disc in slot #5 (thought about not doing it TOO late), it wouldn't play, and it's too small to get pushed out, I guess. I could finally put a disk into that slot, and it would play, but no others will eject or play. Where did the mini-disc go? frustrating!!!
