Apparently Tommy Cooper started out trying to be a serious magician, and became a comedian instead because people laughed so much when he kept messing up the tricks.

I interviewed Robert when he was living at Halton YMCA about twelve years ago. He was an amazing guy. He was still doing magic with materials he made himself from old cardboard boxes. i had a 20 minute private performance. He was fantastic - though every trick he messed up. He is like a modern day Tommy Cooper. let's hope he is still performing. Magic!!!
