"See nature rejoicing" from Purcell's Come Ye Sons of Art, an ode written for the birthday of Queen Mary II of England (1694).
As the son of a musician at the Royal Court, a chorister at the Chapel Royal, and the holder of continuing royal appointments until his death, Henry Purcell worked in Westminster for three different kings over
twenty-five years. He became court composer to King Charles II and wrote operas and incidental music to plays and events. After Charles II's death Parliament invited Mary, Charles II's niece, and her Dutch husband, William of Orange to bring order to tumultuous times in England. This was the Restoration, when the much beloved Queen Mary II ruled jointly with her husband William. She acknowledged the religion and constitutional traditions of her country and brought peace and stability to England.
