This is a song that I learned from a New Lost City Ramblers recording...
(D) A man named William Morgan
took hi s (G) to see a play
(A7) On the homeward journey
they stopped (D) into (G) a ca (D) fé
As soon as they were seated
Liza (G) called on the bill of fare
She (A7) called on the waiter
and ordered everything that was (D) there
Bill said...
"I see that you are hungry girl
and I (G) sure don't like to squeal
but (A7) who do you suppose
is going to (D) pay for (G) such a (D) meal?
You may have known me pretty long
but (G) you sure got my initials wrong
My (D) name is Morgan but it (A7) ain't JP"
"My name is Morgan but it (G) ain't JP
(A7) There's no bank on Wall street
that be (D) longs (G) to (D) me
You may have known me pretty long
but (G) you sure got my initials wrong
My (D) name is Morgan but it (A7) ain't J (D) P"
Bill Morgan married Liza cause he (G) thought
he'd change her ways
But (A7) what she did to him first
I'm (D) most a (G) shamed to (D) say
Whenever she'd go shopping
she'd buy (G) everything she'd see
and (A7) what she couldn't pay for
she sent it C.O. (D) D
One day six big trucks
pulled (G) up to Bill's front door
They (A7) asked him to accept the goods
while (D) they went (G) back for (D) more
It didn't take Bill very long
to (G) grab his hat and coat
and when (A7) Liza got home
she read this little (D) note
My name is Morgan but it (G) ain't JP
(A7) There's no Texas oil wells
that be (D) long (G) to (D) me
You may have known me pretty long
but (G) you sure got my initials wrong
My (D) name is Morgan but it (A7) ain't J (D) P
My name is Morgan but it (G) ain't JP
(A7) You must think I own a railroad
(D) com (G) pan (D) y
You may have known me pretty long
but (G) you sure got my initials wrong
My (D) name is Morgan but it (A7) ain't J (D) P
Note: like many other songs of the period, this was originally a 'coon' song---you could express more of a range of human emotions as a stage Negro or Irishman or Jew than as a 'normal' person, where sentiments generally had to be limited to the approved ones.
This is not to complain about 'political correctness' or some such phantom. It is simple courtesy in these times not to use language offensive to entire groups; still, it is good to remember history.
