Chosen for this year's CPH PIX festival in Copenhagen. Read more here: http://www.cphpix.dk/p/film.lasso?ser...

In the harsh years after the civil war in Catalonia, a shocking and savage attack suddenly takes place. 10-year-old Andreu accidentally discovers the father and son that are its victims. As he leans in on the dying boy, he hears him utter the word Pitorliu - the name of the monster that allegedly rages through the village. When Andreu's father is wrongfully accused of murdering the two, Andreu sets out to find the real murderers, and the boy's explorations end up shedding light on some dark secrets, that have been long suppressed. Augusti Villaronga propels Andreu into a brutal coming-of-age process and forces his young protagonist to relate to an adult world filled with lies, myths and cover-ups. The masterful Spanish director has based 'Black Bread' on a novel by Emil Texidor and manages to conjure up a suggestive psychological universe around his young hero. 'Black Bread' was one of the most talked about films at this year's festival in San Sebastian.

Why is this dubbed in Castilian and not in its original Catalan? Isn't this the ultimate irony considering the film was set in Catalonia during the oppressive civil war years against Catalans??

Not only offensive, but also a pity. Regardless of any political views, the original's in Catalan, and the Spanish version has all the loss of quality a dub conveys. The children's accent, a genuine Catalan one full with cute expressions, gets lost when dubbed into Spanish. I can see why the film's been dubbed into Spanish for non-eastern Spain, but it defnitely should be in Catalan elsewhere for the sake of the film. If some Spaniards can't feel a Catalan film as theirs, that's their problem.

Technically, Spain has always had a desire to merge with Cataluña. If "Spaniards" can't feel a Catalan film as theirs its actually because the Catalanes won't accept to be a part of Spain and consider Castilian as their main language. No offense intended.

Funny how, as Americans, we freak out over fake animal killings but completely look over violence and rape of men, women, and children in our own movies because it's in our culture to be violent. Always be wary of the eyes you use to view the world; they come with their own prejudices.

Is not real. We have an animal right protection law you know? what is wrong with you people? There's plenty of movies with worse tand brutal things (how about the charge in Braveheart, that is an older movie and they did it with fake horses?) and you know they did something, some special effects that can be CGI or puppets or animatronics and so on and so forth... and you still asking if this is real? Give it a thought for a moment.. please... think! it's just well made that's all...

You know, some things in films are very realistic... nevertheless most of them are fiction.
