KILMORE QUAY is an attractive fishing village famous for its traditional whitewashed and thatched cottages. Its harbour is a safe haven for working fishing boats and pleasure craft and in summer is the point of departure for daytrippers to Great Saltee Island bird sanctuary nearby.

This part of the Wexford coast is known as the graveyard of a thousand ships and appropriately a memorial garden to those lost to the unforgiving sea was dedicated in 2001. It names all those lost along this coast and on nearby lakes and rivers, the Wexford sailors lost on all the worlds oceans, sailors torpedoed during the First World War, the crew and passengers of Aer Lingus Flight 712 which was lost near Tuskar Rock Lighthouse in 1968 and also the Air Corps helicopter crew killed during a search and rescue operation in County Waterford in 1999. Sadly additional names have been placed on the memorial due to local tragedies since its dedication.

Also featured in the video is The Guillemot , a retired Lightship which served as a Maritime Museum for many years on the quays at Wexford town. It was moved to Kilmore Quay in the late 1980s and it still serves as a museum. During a storm in January 1990 (which wrecked the old harbour), The Guillemot broke from her new moorings and as a consequence is now set in concrete!

  • hey havnt heard from ya, will you be uploading this year?

  • @NorthWestVideos Hi thanks for the comment. I'm not sure if I'll have time to post and videos anytime soon, I'm too busy with work and domestic responsibilities at the moment

  • Where's all the ice-pop wrappers, beer cans, old boots, and fishing line killing the wildlife? xD.

  • @UnderstandingFnarg in the bins provided of course!

  • I must have missed this last year? Most enjoyable I've just watched Pauls video of Kilmore Quay too and seeing all these blue skies I feel in dire need getting away from it all.

  • @myjugsarehuge Yeah Paul's video is excellent. If its any consolation, the weather is supposed to be good over the next few days - make the most of it!
