Construction zones and the speed limit

Over the summer of 2008, IDOT was doing major construction on the Tri-State. Naturally, the speed limit was reduced by 10 MPH to 45. This stretch is in between Gurnee and Chicago

Seeing as nobody follows the speed limit during normal road conditions, would this construction slow people down? Sorta. Seems like people slowed down a bit, down from the usual flow of 70-75 MPH to 60-65 MPH. (Makes sense, of course, because around Chicago people have to travel at least 20 over on the interstate.)

Driving my dad's trusty Toyota Sienna, back when the mileage was "low".... hahaha.

  • The 45 mph limit is way way way too low when there is no direct obstruction. If there are real obstructions people do slow down. The problem is they set these construction zones when nothing is really going on. We have one near here where its a 6 lane urban highway area and posted at 40 mph (!). There is one 200 foot area where it is obstructed, but the rest is fine. People ignore it, and rightfully so. 55 was probably already too low for the original limit.
