"Empire of the Sun" is a 1987 American coming of age war film based on J. G. Ballard's semi-autobiographical novel of the same name. Steven Spielberg directed the film, which stars Christian Bale (winner of the first ever "Best Performance by a Juvenile Actor" award from the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures), John Malkovich, Miranda Richardson, and Nigel Havers. The film tells the story of Jamie "Jim" Graham, a young boy who goes from living in a wealthy British family in Shanghai, to becoming a prisoner of war in Lunghua Civilian Assembly Center, a Japanese internment camp, during World War II.

"Empire of the Sun" soundtrack was composed by John Williams.

  • What did the suitcase at the end represent again? Love this movie, but forgot a lot of it!!

  • @808ac it represents the old life of Jamie, his childhood and innocence. In a previous scene we see Jamie throwing his suitcase in the river and we know he's just chosen to leave his old life behind.

  • Actually...Yes CHRISTIAN BALE DID SING THIS SONG WITH THE CHOIR he also sang in the plane scene...make no mistake you can hear his lisp. Originally he wasn't going to but Steven thought it would work and it did!

  • @stratmandar sorry to contradict you, but that's not true. Christian Bale sang himself only in "Newsies".

  • This movie seems to be of the "love it or hate it" type. Some have criticised it for lack of historical accuracy (such as the ability to see the atomic flash in China), but these criticisms are ridiculous. It never claimed to be a documentary, it's a FILM! The biggest criticism is that it was too long and meandering, perhaps it would have benefited from tighter editing. But, the power of scenes such as this one, and the performance of Bale make it a great film.

  • i lose my shit everytime i watch this..

  • @808ac Try to remember first scene from this film - coffins on the river, pushing by the boats. In a manner of speaking, this suitcase is like one of this coffins. "Jaime" buried "Jim" in this suitcase.

  • Hmm..i'm glad that Jim found his parents, i was surprize that his dad walked right by him like he were someone else kid, but his mom reconzie him after 4 yrs being apart from each. I wonder now what he'll do now since now the war is over...will he keep his name "Jim" or go back to "Jaime"? well guess he's happy to be with his parents again..now he can rest & move on with his life in peace.

  • This is still heartbreaking.

  • Omg finally Academy! Christian Bale won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for The Fighter in 2011! He's deserved an Oscar since this film!!

My heart goes out to you! :,(

  • People are more important than things.

  • The suitcase represents baggage of the past. In this case dispensing with childhood and being an adult. In Jamie's case he grew up, but not in a good way as he wanted his parents to do that. As an Australian, we don't want to be taught by our enemies, but our own people. Hence the final scene. It is very heart wealming!
