(Denver Colorado) Taiko Percussion Ensemble performs an ancient Japanese cultural tradition that was originally used in battle to intimidate and frighten the enemy.
Taiko in Colorado began with the inspiration of the San Jose Taiko Group and the discipline of the Sensei Tanaka. In 1976, Mark Miyoshi, one of the founding members of Denver Taiko, went out to San Jose and saw this group perform. To him, taiko was the perfect combination of cultural and creative expression. He brought his enthusiasm back to Colorado and Denver Taiko, the fourth oldest group in North America, was born. When Tanaka Sensei came to Colorado, he provided Denver Taiko with the discipline and technique to change from a percussion group to a taiko group. Currently in Colorado there are five groups performing and sharing their love of taiko, Denver Taiko, Taiko with Toni, Mirai Daiko, Crestone Kaminari Taiko and Boulder Taiko "HIBIKI". The groups are diverse in their styles and philosophies but all strive for the common goal of sharing and celebrating the spirit of taiko with the community.
