This clip opens with the voice of David Chalmers describing the lack of consensus among philosophers of mind on just how we should define "consciousness." Then, John Searle describes the recent increased interest in the science of consciousness, and how it is no longer viewed as an area only to be studied by mystics. Christoph Koch follows this by briefly describing the "Hard Problem of Consciousness."

Next, John Searle discuses enlightenment thinking and how it has lead us to think that there is nothing in the universe that is inherently unknowable to rational inquiry.

Howard Kaye then discusses some of the religious implications of evolutionary theory. And finally, António Damásio, Daniel Dennett, Patricia Churchland, and Paul Churchland provide their thoughts on the mind-brain and the potential paradigm shift that awaits us as empirical research proceeds.

(Note: With a good eye you can catch both Roger Penrose and Ned Block during the conference scene.)

  • Though the mind evolved from the brain, in time they evolved different but interelated functions.

  • "There is nothing that is inherently unintelligible in the universe."

-John Searle, a Homo Sapiens who thinks he understands every possible aspect of reality.

  • Daniel Dennet is a p-zombie! watch?v=ags_M3ILszo

  • The next step is not the conciousness. The next step is the "social" consciousness. The individual will not have the global understanding of the world except for simplified version. But each individual has a protocol to reach his neighbor. And the knowledge is only in the society. And therefore philosophers will lose their profession if they keep talking of individual consciousness like the brain.

  • more like the gathering of John Searle and a bunch of other jokers

  • Can you clarify that statement and elaborate on it?

  • I'm laughing my ass off at both Lenny's comment and yours, somor.
