Why are some Deaf Society interpreting services changing names?
Sign Language Communications will be the new business name used by all state Deaf Society Interpreting Services around Australia. It is an alliance of Australias most experienced providers of Auslan/English interpreting services. Working together creates better opportunities for growth and increased service provision and means we can work at a national level as well as working at a state level. SLC state organisations will continue to provide a professional, culturally sensitive interpreting service that is aware of the local Deaf communitys needs and employing local interpreters.
Why was the name Sign Language Communications chosen?
Sign Language Communications recognises all of our work including Auslan/English Interpreting, Note Taking, Deaf Relay Interpreting and Tactile Interpreting.
How can I contact SLC?
A new website address with an automatic link to each of the state SLC on-line booking systems will be launched in August and you can contact each state using MSN Messenger too.
The new voice phone number for SLC is 1300 123 SLC. Calls to this number from anywhere in Australia, will automatically connect you to the local state Deaf Society.
All existing contact details, including TTY and fax for each state Deaf Society will stay the same and contact can continue using these methods if you like. You will continue to work with the booking staff and interpreters that you are used to.
How will this change affect the Deaf Community?
The Deaf Community will continue to receive a high level, professional service. The Deaf Community will now have easy access to interpreting and communication services across the whole of Australia. If members of the Deaf Community travel to different states in Australia, they will only need to remember one MSN or website address.
How will this change affect Interpreters?
Interpreters will still be employed by their state Deaf Society. Their pay and working conditions will stay the same.
Will there be an increase in service charges through SLC?
No all fees currently charged by each state Deaf Society will stay the same. Of course, Deaf Societies may decide to increase their fees in the future but this will not be because of SLC.
