Marbella, Spain - Michelle Obama and her youngest daughter, Sasha, seven, have arrived in Spain for a short holiday as US officials scrambled to defuse embarassing allegations of institutional racism against their host country.

Hours before the first African-American first lady of the US and her daughter were settling into the luxurious Villa Padierna hotel on the outskirts of Marbella, the US state department removed a warning about police racism in Spain from one of its websites.

"We have received isolated reports that racial prejudice may have contributed to the arrest or detention of some African-Americans travelling in Spain," the bureau of consular affairs had warned on its travel advice website.

"Recently, two African-American US government employees were questioned by police in Barcelona for no apparent reason. One was detained and suffered physical injuries in the process."

The warning disappeared yesterday, but was still accessible in the page's internet cache.

Sources at the Villa Padierna hotel said that Michelle Obama had told them she had come to Spain to rest and relax. President Barack Obama, who turns 49 today, is not expected in Spain. His elder daughter Malia, 10, is at a summer camp.

Secret service personnel working for the White House have already scouted several spots that the Obama's might visit, including the Alhambra palace complex at Granada.

Michelle Obama is expected to see King Juan Carlos and other members of Spain's royal family, who are holidaying in Majorca.

  • @saturdayboy

If you talk about antiquity, yes, Spain is an older country. But! You were never a united one. Spain does have its weight, but only in history. You lost your empire just as quick as you acquired it! Look at all the countries where the British have stayed then look at South America, Philippines, your influence did not make those countries First World countries, even southern Spain or Galicia looks backward. I like jamon serrano but you need more than that to be a global player ;)

The US wouldnt have put a man on the moon if Spain had not "put a man" in America first. Spain is a country at least 4 centuries older than the US, and the spanish cultural roots date back to the times on the early Roman empire or even before. Spain has 4 official languages, and during the XVI century was the biggest empire on earth, possibly the biggest empire ever. No offense, but Spain has its own weight in world history too!

  • WTF?? Racist?? ingornat.

  • @FutbolEspanol2010

You cant compare us to yourself, the US put a man on the moon, what about Spain??

And we are not a democracy, mob rule, we are a Republic!!

  • Spain racist? PFFFFF

  • viva España

  • yes, spain is totally racist! yet another country I would not set foot in, as if their country is interesting anyways. big yawn! smh

  • I'm Spanish and racism is NOT only limited to Spain..hell the US lived a RACIALLY segregated society until the 1960's (another 10 years before changes were actually being started and even so, racism is still alive and well in a country that supposedly is the bastion of democracy in the world)
