The composition, by Jaakko Mantyjarvi, is dedicated to those who lost their lives on the ferry "Estonia" on September 28, 1994, Europes worst maritime disaster. The ship was enroute to Sweden from Estonia. There were 852 souls on board. Only 137 survived. Only a small portion of the opening soprano solo and the tenor solo were cut, as well as the last minute and a half to fit under the 10 min YouTube limit.

I loved doing this piece in college - what a challenge :) And so haunting. Great composer!

@haugwi01 That may have been the case in the past. With the Dale Warland Singers disbanded, choirs like Conspirare and the Phoenix Chorale are taking the lead, not to mention amazing international groups like the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir. Granted, Minnesota does have a very rich choral tradition, but it's not making the news like it used to.

I a few years ago, the UD chorale did this singing nearer my god to thee (the last song played on the Titanic) immediately before.....this is one of my most favorite pieces to perform, thanks for putting it up!
