"Ben" was created for the 1972 film of the same name, the sequel to movie "Willard". It was written by Don Black and Walter Scharf and originally intended for Donny Osmond to sing. The deal was offered to Jackson when Osmond was on tour at the time. As Michael's first solo hit, it spent one week at the top of the U.S. pop charts in 1972. Though Jackson did have pet rats, the scene of Michael with a rat in "American Dream; The Jacksons" had nothing to do with this song.
