A baby Victorian crowned pigeon hatched just a few days before a baby orangutan was born at the Zoo.
Both are about a month old in this video showing them with their mothers. Both are healthy and growing at the expected healthy, normal rate. As you can see, the Victorian crowned pigeon baby is progressing a lot more quickly toward adulthood. Its mother is already encouraging it to eat independently, and it often goes off by itself away from the parents for brief periods.
The baby orangutan stays cradled in its mothers arms, clinging to her, all the time, which is exactly what it is supposed to do at this early stage of its life.
The Zoo staff does not know the sex of the Victorian crowned pigeon baby, but one staff person told me over the weekend that they now know for sure the baby orangutan is a girl.
Great video!
