HANSON, MA- Kevin Coleman, the man who was dating his former girlfriend, before he shot Coleman in the back Monday afternoon and then turned the weapon on himself, a relative said.
Now, after the burst of violence outside Colemans Hanson home Monday afternoon, MacLellan is dead of the self-inflicted rifle wound and Coleman is recovering from a serious hip injury at a local hospital.
Scott had told him he was going to do this, the stepmother, Irene Coleman, of Whitman told The Enterprise Tuesday. Kevin tried talking to him and saying, We can handle this in a different way.
All his friends were trying to help (MacLellan), trying to explain to him, Youve got to move on, Irene Coleman added.
She said Coleman, 36, and MacLellan, 39, had been friends, growing up in the same Whitman neighborhood, hanging with the same group as adults.
Their differences came when Coleman started dating MacLellans former girlfriend, a 37-year-old woman who also lives in that Whitman neighborhood and is a lifelong friend, she said.
Scott just snapped, thats all, said Irene Coleman.
Authorities said MacLellan fired a single shot, striking Coleman in the back as he put his Harley Davidson motorcycle away after returning from a trip to Marthas Vineyard with his girlfriend.
MacLellan, sitting in his minivan in the parking lot of Colemans apartment on East Washington Street in Hanson, then shot himself in the head.
Responding to a 1:44 p.m. 911 call about a possible shooting, police found MacLellan in his minivan with the Remington rifle between his legs. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Coleman was found injured outside his house. He was conscious and talked to police briefly before being rushed to Brockton Hospital, where he underwent surgery.
Over a girl, theres no need of it, said Kirk Leaman, a neighbor of the Colemans in Whitman.
Ive known Kevin for 15 years, Leaman said. Kevins a very nice kid, down to earth. My son plays with his two little boys (ages 4 and 5).
Leaman said he had not met Colemans girlfriend, but knew of her. Leaman did not know MacLellan, who was living less than a third of a mile away.
Coleman and his girlfriend were known at Damiens and JJs Pub, both eateries near his Hanson apartment.
Kevin wouldnt hurt a fly, said Sean Cahill, 37, of Hanson, who has known Coleman for eight years and sees him at Damiens. Hes a wicked nice guy and would do anything for you.
Coleman works at the Hanover Department of Public Works.
On Tuesday, Colemans parents were counting their blessings, knowing that he was OK.
His hip wound was serious, but no vital organs were struck when Coleman was shot, his stepmother said.
It could have been worse, it definitely could have been worse, said Irene Coleman. I feel so bad for Scotts mother. We were lucky.
She said Coleman and his wife have been separated for many months, and his girlfriend had tried for three years to break up with MacLellan.
Colemans wife, who lives in Hanover, was at the hospital with him after the shooting on Monday, Irene Coleman said.
Coleman recovered from a near-fatal motorcycle crash in 1996 and will bounce right back now, Irene Coleman said. Colemans father, also Kevin Coleman, declined to discuss the shooting.
Hes going to be with us, the elder Coleman said Tuesday after visiting his son at Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital.
