SORRY, BUT THIS SONG IS NOT ABOUT BILL ROBINSON. BILL "BOJANGLES" ROBINSON WAS NOT A DOWN & OUT MAN. HE WAS WELL DRESSED AND WELL EDUCATED, DIDN'T DRINK, ETC. THE SONG JUST BORROWED HIS NAME. HE WAS MAKING UP TO $35,000 PER WEEK WHEN HE WORKED. HE CAME FROM A WEALTHY FAMILY.

@babyruthfosho WOW! I personally knew Elder Nathaniel Lawson when I was a teenager. He used to come up to NYC to preach at my dads church. He was such a nice man and I was in awe of him! He could play the piano, sing and Preach! He gave his testimony how he had left his family for over 20 years and was down in New Orleans living a messed up life and how God saved him by that car accident! didn't know he passed! Is there any info on his passing? you can email me at bobby1361@yahoo.com thanks!

As much as I love Bill Robinson and those pictures from the movies, that song has NOTHING to do with Bill Robinson. Listen to the song. Jerry Jeff Walker is singing about how he was thrown in jail one night in New Orleans. There was an older man in the cell who called himself "Mr Bojangles."

The man's real name was Nathaniel Lawson, a street dancer/entertainer with street name was "Porkchop". Hit by a bus in early 84; my friend Jean Joseph was social worker on case. One of 4 sons of late Bishop R. C. Lawson of New York City. His life changed 4 better after leaving hospital. Left wife/family (including infant son) n Ohio 21 years earlier; his wife had never filed 4 divorce. Wife/kids forgave him, family reunited. Saw happy couple n mid-90's. He died 5+ yrs ago. Happy ending.
