@genevabuck According to the E-mail I got back from Leatherman they were made in the late 70's and early 80's

@CutleryNovice How do you buy something in the 70's, when it wasn't invented and marketed until 1983? I take it that you don't do detective work for a living.

Anyways, I got one of these second-hand that was so stiff it hurt my fingers to try and open the blade, which made me hate it at first. IIRC, I oiled it a bit and it's loosened up some. I like it for what it is, as well as my SwissTool. But there's no convincing my father that multitools serve any real purpose. He's as stubborn as a mule.

And just in case Wikipedia's not a reliable enough source for anyone, see:

(slash)history Now can we quit the name-calling?

FWIW, Leatherman got his idea for the tool during an ill-fated trip in 1975 when the car he'd rented kept breaking down. It was several years later that it finally went into production. People insulting each other in the comments over factual inaccuracies is juvenile. See: en(dot)wikipedia(dot)org(slash
)wiki(slash)Leatherman "The truth is out there. You just have to know where to look."

@genevabuck Dude did you not hear what he said? He got it in the 70's dumbass

@1001samurais it does rust, but you have to really abuse it for it to get that bad, mine got left in a boat for a couple weeks and it was crazy rusty, but i sanded it down, wirebrushed it, and oiled it. good as new =P
do you oil it or anything to prevent rusting? my uncle just gave me a leatherman supertool. i don't know if certain spots are rust or just some stuff that won't come off. has your multi tool rusted based on how old it is? plz reply

@kinzz97
Yes, you should definitely oil the pivot areas (just a drop in each place) and wipe it down with a cloth and oil, then with a clean, dry cloth. That will leave a super thin coat of oil which will help prevent rust if it gets wet. They are made of stainless steel, so they are very rust resistant, but they can rust if they are left wet for days/weeks.
Peace, Duane

Leatherman started selling his first tools in 1983 and that is not one of the first ones. This tool has the lanyard ring on the knurled screws showing that it is a newer PST. Sorry Duane.

If you sent it to Leatherman Repair Center, they will fix it for free. You can still buy them (used) on Ebay.
