Starting Tuesday, Feb 16th we challenge you to go to our website and come up with a mnemonic appropriate for this new era of planetary science, and we'll let you decide whether to stick to the eight official planets or fold in the dwarf planets as well (Ceres, Pluto, Haumea, Makemake, and Eris—five and counting). www.pbs.org/nova/pluto/

  • I just realized .. thats a TV behind him ,, lol

  • the one I learned in school is Many Vampires eat marshmallow jelly sandwiches under nine plates.

marshmallow has "mars" right there at the beginning, so as not to confuse the two m planets.

  • In England 30 years ago it was "Mr Vale Eats Many Jam Sandwiches Under Newhaven Pier"... Now it's just "under Newhaven" :-OOO

  • @Phelan666 If pluto was considered a planet it would be nine pizzas lol

  • @MatchCard NINE PIZZAS!!!!!1!

  • LIKE CHRIS CROCKER MIGHT SAY "LEAVE( PLUTO) ALONEEEEEE" LEAVE IT ALONE"" WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

  • If Stephen Colbert Can't Remember All the Planets

Then how will he ever learn the names of the several thousand Plutoids? (bodies like Pluto in a similar orbit to Pluto, some of which are larger than Pluto).

  • A desire to understand the reasoning behind the reclassification of Pluto is, unfortunately, beyond most American's interest. Regardless I personally find it quite interesting and a very good example of how the scientific community is constantly updating it's own ideas. Again i apologize for my apparently snide remarks but I am quite worried that you may be taking all this a little to seriously. It is a youtube comment section after all. Cheers.

  • Thanks CH - but as Ive already stated, your efforts were redundant by the time you made them.

Regarding your question, Ive no objection to factual corrections - though not if theyre in the snide manner of a wannabe smartarse. I also find Americans who forget other countries exist objectionable. Thats off-topic in this forum though.

I suggested earlier that this effort might be better spent raising awareness of how and why planets were re-categorised. What do you think about that, CH?
