  • So, the leads from the rails are hooked to the capacitor. It is then connected to the decoder? Sorry I am not an electronics guru. Does the capacitor emit heat?

  • @drupp68

It's more complicated. The decoder contains a current limiting charge circuit for the capacitor, which also limits the voltage.

  • So did you just solder the capacitor in-line with the motor feed, or is other circuitry involved? I've often wondered about the possibilities of using a cap' like this, and clearly, yours works beautifully!

  • A bit more complicated.. I designed my own decoder (HW and SW) which runs off 3V. The capacitor is charged to this voltage. When the loco is commanded to stop and does not see a DCC signal, it begins to crawl until it sees power again. The decoder also features EMF control. This is not a commercial product, just for fun.

  • Superb. Lenz what decoder?

  • The decoder is my own design (hardware+software). It is based on a Silabs C8051F300 microcontroller.

  • Thanks for sharing. Any advise on making a new chassis for one of these engines. The original chassis for mine broke in 3.

  • @mattgin There's a screw on top, right in the middle of the saddle tank!

  • Nice! Ive got one now that im trying to get running again, how do you get the shell off of the frame on these?
