On 09 November, 2009, President Mohamed Nasheed of the Maldives addressed ministers and leaders from a number of the most vulnerable countries in the world to climate change. In his speech, he invited those leaders to join him in signing a pact for the survival of their countries, instead of a "suicide pact" at the UN climate talks in Copenhagen.

  • The most compelling speech on taking action on climate change by any political leader in the world -- and with reason. Fantastic! I sincerely hope the developed nations' leaders are listening and not willing to jeopardize our collective future in a "collective suicide pact."

  • Thumbs up if you Agree That All Maldivians Should relocate To Australia! :)

cause they have better education standards and health facilities then all asian countrys!!

  • My question is what has he done for the development of these islands. Why haven't the government or nasheed relocated people from tiny islands to a bigger island. We don't need to promote a good transport system. This is a matter for the rich people who owns 20 story aparments in their own land in Male'. Because if Nasheed's goverment fails this would be a real big problem for the land owners.

  • We need foregn currency to import goods from other countries. These are things we require for our basic needs. How many people in our country lives under poverty. More than 70 percent of our country shares there income within their family for their basic needs. 60 percent of their income is spent for rent in Male' and 1/3rd of the population of entire country lives in Male'.And 60 percent of the population of Male' lives for rent and they are from the rural atolls.

  • Nasheed wants to get attention and popularity of international media. He does not want to do things beneficial to the maldivian community. He should be ashamed of himself representing "Maldives" and people of the country. How much aid did he get from the international community to protect our environment. How much did he get from leasing our international airport. It must be more than 1.3 billion dollars. Where are these dollars why had the dollar rate increased to 15.42 from 12.85.

  • Thursday, 3rd December 2009 Why the Maldives aren't sinking by Nils-Axel Mörner

"The people of the Maldives had no problems surviving the 17th century, which was 50cm higher than now.

By the end of this century, sea level may have risen by between 30cm and 50cm according to the various IPCC scenarios. Our records suggest a maximum of 20cm. Neither of those levels would pose any real problem — simply a return to the situation in the 17th and the 19th to early 20th centuries, respectively.
