Islam is the fastest-growing religion in the world. In North America, most converts to Islam are women, many of whom are drawn to the religion through their experiences of social injustice and political involvement.

Ironically many mosques force women to pray behind barriers away from the men, and some mosques do not even permit women to enter the building. When it comes to user-friendliness for women, Canadian mosques run the entire gamut.

In Me and the Mosque, journalist and filmmaker Zarqa Nawaz visits mosques throughout Canada and talks to scholars, colleagues, friends and neighbours about equal access for women. Discussions about the historical role of women in the Islamic faith, the current state of mosques in Canada and personal stories of anger, fear, acceptance and defiance punctuate the film. And Nawaz herself speaks of the spiritual longing that comes from belonging to an institution that doesn't want you.

With original animation, archival footage and deeply personal interviews, Me and the Mosque is a smart, self-aware and whimsical story that documents the debates and presents the personalities on all sides of the issue.

  • where are part 2 , part4 & part 5

  • Youtube took them down. Copyrights were claimed :(

  • i do not disagree with the sisters that we should not be seperated in the masaajid but they not to look at them self and see if they r proper dressed cos when some one finish they prayer and end seeing a sister whos wearing tite clothes with hijab on her head thinking she fully dressed its not rite for us and it reduce our emaan. Its already hard for us facing the trials out side so why would they want to bring those trials inside the masaajid. The woman must wear the niqaab cos its crutial.

  • Yeah, it's always the women right? just because men cannot control themselves.

Like I sister already said, do you consider yourself an uncontrollable animal who not even in the house of God can control your sexual desires?

    That'd unbelievable!!

Men should not think of themselves as instinctive animal and SHOULD NO sexualized the sisters IN THE MASJID!! You go their to praise God not to stare at the women's bodies to see if they have tight clothes or not!!

  • I believe this video speaks is not of Islam, but against Islam. And I also believe that the people shown in this video as muslim men and women are not muslims,or atleast the non-practising muslims who have no knowledge of Islam. They can as well form a new religion where they dont have to keep hijab and intermingle with men.But Islam prohibits it,like it or not. period

  • What the hell are you talking about!! All women in this video are wearing hijab and are striving to live as close to the sunnah of the Prophet as they can. And they don't want to "intermingle with men" as you say, they want to be part of the ONE community, NOT two, that we have to be.

Open up your mind, man! Stop living in the 6th century (Jahiliyyah)

  • Glad that I was able to see this much again. Remembered enjoying seeing it on the CBC. Zarqa Nawaz has done good work with this and Little Mosque on the Prairie.

The example where there can be equality and it be taken away goes beyond Islam. American under attack, the Patriot Act, Islam under attack, woman should not speak out - excuses in both cases. What do you think of Monia Mazigh (Maher Arar's wife) and El-Farouk Khaki founder of Salaam Canada?

  • great ending

  • noo!

  • asak ibrahim 27.can u please tell me then ifs its even wrong to put up barriers segregate men n women at social fuctions like weddings?

  • put them up again with another account ;)

if you don't label them but put them on surfthechannel, they prob won't be removed for a while.

  • does anyone know the name of the song played at the very end of the film?

  • very good documentry thank you have subscribed 5 stars

  • Also Habibi, in Surah 2 ayat 42 it says "And mix up not the truth with falsehood, nor hide the truth while you know." This is truth, and no not everyone is going to exept it. When prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) brought Islam not everyone exepted it at first. Stay deligent in your studies, and in your work. You have a sister here that supports you. Ny
