This Inkscape tutorial demonstrates how to convert a bitmap image into a vector image by using Inkscape's "Trace Bitmap" function. Inkscape version 0.48 was used for this video. This tutorial shows tips and tricks that can be useful for beginners as well as all Inkscape users.

  • very helpful! but you didn't explain what the "smooth" check box does. If i want a bitmap drawing to not look pixalated, and i want smooth lines, is that what you'd use it for?

    If smooth is selected then a Gaussian Blur will be applied to the bitmap before it is traced. This will smooth the image but a loss of detail can occur. You may want to experiment with smooth enabled and disabled to determine which works better for your particular image.

  • I have a question about vector imaging. I'm wanting to convert a bitmap image into a vector image such that I can send the design in to be laser engraved into something. Is this process you show here basically what I'm looking for?
