http://www.ted.com America was built by makers -- curious, enthusiastic amateur inventors whose tinkering habit sparked whole new industries. At TED@MotorCity, MAKE magazine publisher Dale Dougherty says we're all makers at heart, and shows cool new tools to tinker with, like Arduinos, affordable 3D printers, even DIY satellites.

TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Featured speakers have included Al Gore on climate change, Philippe Starck on design, Jill Bolte Taylor on observing her own stroke, Nicholas Negroponte on One Laptop per Child, Jane Goodall on chimpanzees, Bill Gates on malaria and mosquitoes, Pattie Maes on the "Sixth Sense" wearable tech, and "Lost" producer JJ Abrams on the allure of mystery. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design, and TEDTalks cover these topics as well as science, business, development and the arts. Closed captions and translated subtitles in a variety of languages are now available on TED.com, at http://www.ted.com/translate.

No, he wasn't talking about inventors. While 'inventors' as we think of them, are makers, makers don't need to be 'inventors'.

He was talking about creating things. Like... writing a song, painting a picture- they are obvious ones which come to my mind. We may not all do particularly creative stuff like that, but we do all have the ability to. I think this video was really about accepting and embracing that part of human nature.

    :)

  • i bet neither one of the people who said something negative about this speech can talk in public. you d better start appreciating men who have something else to say rather than sit their his ass and criticize

  • Do some of you not understand what he's talking about? Reading some of these comments is a little depressing - I applaud you on your quest for knowledge/inspiration but TED is not about something tangible, it's about ideas. This video is not about "Americans making things!", but about humans as individual creatures full of unique abilities. Whether we're raising a child, filing our taxes, or creating the worlds next wireless platform...we're all making something. Physical or not. It's our nature

  • If this guy is saying we are all inventors, I would have to disagree. Yeah we COULD all be inventors or "makers" but that doesn't mean we ARE or we SHOULD. Honestly a dissapointing speech that I struggled to find a relivant message.

  • wasted 10 minutes of maker time watching this talk

Dale needs to go make something
