BELGRADE, May 27. 2010. (news agencies) -- Commemoration for the victims of the Brussels Haysel stadium who died 25 years ago was held in Belgrade on Thursday, May 27, followed by the regular, two-day, session of the Council of Europe Standing Committee for Prevention of Violence at Sports Events, hosted by the Serbian Sports and Youth Ministry.
Participants of the regular Committee's 30th session held a minute of silence to mark the 25 years since 39 people died at the Haysel stadium in Brussels, when violence broke out during the final game of then Champion's Cup between Liverpool and Juventus
This tragedy caused a quick reaction by the CoE, which shortly after adopted the European Convention on Spectator Violence and Misbehaviour at Sports Events and in particular Football Matches.
This convention was signed by 41 European states, and has been clarified and supplemented several times over the years to update it in accordance to current trends.
The goal of this meeting is to review the latest recommendations of the Council of Europe which deal with stadium security and sports events in general.
"This form of cooperation with the Council of Europe means a great deal to Serbia. For example, the recommendations on using pyrotechnics, infrastructure standards, as well as the presence of security stewards at stadiums are of great significance for the security of sports events", Serbian Sports and Youth Minister Snezana Samardzic Markovic emphasized.
Today it is unimaginable to hold a final game of such big competition at such simple stadium, said Belgium Ambassador in Serbia Denise de Hauwere.
"We did all we could since then. Unfortunately, violence is still present. It could be said that 98 percent of things we do regarding the stadium security refers to only 2 percent of spectators", she added.
