The Town Lake Trail Foundation (TLTF) oversaw the completion of the first new restroom built on the Trail in over 30 years. A survey by the Austin Parks and Recreation Department (PARD) in 2003 identified additional restrooms as a key need for Trail users. The trail stretch, between I-35 and Congress Avenue, is getting ever-increasing use as the number of Trail users continues to grow and the urban core is more densely developed. The area is slated for even more use as the programming at the nearby new Mexican American Cultural Center increases
Since the Lady Bird Lake Trail is considered by many to be a natural oasis, TLTF wanted to make sure that any new facility would blend into this environment. The facility includes standard building materials that are found in "Austin-style" structures including a series of Corten steel panels and burnt orange crushed granite pathways. These materials allow the structure to be nearly maintenance--free. The steel panel spacing is close enough to provide privacy but open enough to allow the free flow of air through the structure and out of the ventilated roof.
