Smiles- Magnolia Jazz Band 1989
Recorded at the beautiful San Diego Jazz Festival in southern California we see a performance from the the Magnolia Jazz Band from Oslo, Norway. This band plays the New Orleans revival style and is considered the best in this idiom in Norway. Trombonist Gunnar Gotaas started this band. At this festival next to Gunnar the members are Anders Bjornstad tp, John Harper bjo, Morten Gunnar Larsen pno, and Bonsak Schieldrop drs.
A special guest was invited for this festival. On clarinet is Jacques Gauthe from New Orleans. Jacques plays clarinet in the early New Orleans style. Originally from Paris, Jacques, in his early jazz days, had lessons from the great Sidney Bechet. 1190

Of course I miss your band. These guys are a nice bunch. I played with Jacques Gauthe when he visited Toronto in 1995.

  • @FatsJazzCats Y'all go to New Orleans to see white European guys

    try to play black jazz?

You be VERY HAPPY now since Katrina then, 'cause they done

LOCKED OUT most of the African-American folks from N.O. for good.

Their homes been BULLDOZERED and rich developers took the

lots and built HIGH PRICE CONDOS where all them great black

native N.O. musicians used to live.

Have fun now, y'hear? Say hi to Mickey Mouse in N.O. Disneyland.

(Watch it, though. Last I checked Mickey Mouse is BLACK).

  • these guys really get it on--now this is jazz!!

Tu as swingué, mon ami. Repose-toi, je passerai te voir.

  • Hey folks - this is one of my favorite NOLA bands - and I enjoy seing my friend Jaques Gauthé who years ago gave me his old Selmer SopranoSax which I've been playing ever since - sometimes together with him and Jamey Whight at the Fritzel's European Jazzclub on Bourbon. Jaques and me we wanted to have a reunion in Ascona - but on the way there he died at home. Fats von Gerolstein

  • Alldeles herlig... Det svinger så det nesten gjør vondt!!!
