    Please keep ponies away from the Decemberists. Unless Colin writes a song that involves ponies. But the real kind. A song told from the perspective of a pony bred from the mount of a 19th century French soldier during a great war who falls in love with the ghost of a French courtesan. He is also a ghost.

    His harmonies are damn hard to find! I can sing Jenny's, Rachel's, and John's harmonies just fine, but something about Ezra's are hard to find. Especially this one line in California One/Youth and Beauty Brigade; it's the harmony on the phrase "it's in your head" in the lyric "And if I said/ Oh, it's in your head." I've been trying to hit that without thinking about it for years and I can't do it.

    Lord, what is it about Ezra Holbrook's backups on this song in particular that just mesmerize me? I try to sing them, it's like he's in the room with me, changing the harmonies just to fuck with me, this was the first Decemberists song I heard, & I think it still has to be my favorite, despite the absolute wealth of great music they have provided since this album!
