Idea #1: Mixing major and minor scales. We're in the key of G. I play Slash's major scale (the minor blues scale shifted 3 frets to the left) and mix it with the blues scale to create a different -- more rebellious -- feel.

Idea #2: Bending the perfect fifth, in A minor pentatonic.

Idea #3: Adding the major sixth to A minor pentatonic when playing a fast passage.

(Sorry for the slightly out-of-tune A chord during the distorted stuff)

  • I'm a rhythm player interested in expanding my soloing, what scales would you recommend I practice to branch out into leads/shredding?

  • @drfeelgoodTO I would start off learning the minor pentatonic scale in the standard position (you can worry about the other positions later), followed by the blues scale. Once you have mastered those, you can experiment with different modes, which in effect add 2 or 3 notes to the scales you will already know.
